Florida's path to MFT licensure runs through intern registration and a board-approved qualified supervisor. This guide covers what Florida requires of registered MFT interns and how supervisor approval works.

The figures below come from Chapter 491, Florida Statutes, and the board's rules and guidance, checked in October 2026. Florida amended its supervision rules in July 2026, so confirm current requirements with the board before you plan your hours.

The Requirements

Pre-licensed title: Registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern. You register before you start counting post-degree experience. Registration expires 60 months after it is issued (s. 491.0045, F.S.).

Experience: two years of post-master's clinical experience, including 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy (s. 491.005, F.S.; Fla. Admin. Code 64B4-2.002). At least half of your clients must be receiving marriage and family therapy services.

Supervision: 100 hours spread over at least 100 weeks, with at least one hour every two weeks. Individual supervision means one supervisor with no more than two interns. Group supervision means three to six interns, and group hours alternate with individual hours.

Exam and coursework: the national MFT exam, an eight-hour Florida laws and rules course, a three-hour HIV/AIDS course, and a two-hour domestic violence course within six months of licensure.

Qualified Supervisor Approval

Florida requires a board-approved qualified supervisor. The supervisor files a qualified supervisor statement with the board, and the board's guidance says to wait for confirmation of approval before supervising any registered intern. Once approved, the status shows on the supervisor's Florida license verification.

To qualify, a supervisor needs five years of clinical experience and supervision training. AAMFT Approved Supervisor status satisfies the training part (64B4-11.007), but it does not replace the board's approval step. Before you count a single hour, check that your supervisor's license verification shows qualified supervisor status.

Electronic Supervision

Florida allows supervision by face-to-face electronic means. The rule has required at least half of supervision interactions to be in person, unless the supervisor determines that fully electronic supervision will not harm the intern's clients. The July 2026 amendment changed related language, so ask your supervisor how the current rule applies to your arrangement and keep that decision in your records.

Planning Your Hours

  • Register as an intern before you start counting experience
  • Confirm your supervisor's qualified supervisor status on the license verification site
  • Spread supervision evenly; 100 hours must cover at least 100 weeks
  • Track MFT clients separately so you can show that at least half receive MFT services
  • Finish the laws and rules and HIV/AIDS courses early

Supervision for Florida Interns

Florida interns work in a political and regulatory climate that weighs heavily on queer and trans clients and clinicians. Supervision that understands that climate helps you hold it clinically without carrying it alone.

I hold an active Florida LMFT license and AAMFT Approved Supervisor status. My Florida qualified supervisor approval is pending, and supervision for Florida interns begins once it is posted. See the Florida supervision page or request a session to talk about timing.
