Indiana is one of the clearest states on telehealth supervision: its statute allows all supervision hours to be virtual. This guide covers what Indiana requires of marriage and family therapist associates.

Indiana's Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board operates under the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA). The figures below come from Indiana Code 25-23.6 and 839 IAC 1-4, checked in October 2026. Confirm current requirements with the board before you plan your hours.

The Requirements

Pre-licensed title: Marriage and Family Therapist Associate (LMFTA). The associate license requires passing a board exam and can be renewed twice, with more renewals at the board's discretion (IC 25-23.6-8-1.5, 8-8.5).

Experience: 1,000 hours of post-graduate clinical experience over at least 24 months (839 IAC 1-4-3.2). At least half of your clients must be receiving MFT services, and your experience must include couples and family work (IC 25-23.6-8-2.7). Hours earned as an associate do not expire.

Supervision: the licensing agency lists 200 hours, at least 100 of them individual. Individual supervision is face-to-face with no more than two supervisees (839 IAC 1-4-3.2).

Exams: the national MFT exam and an Indiana jurisprudence exam.

Virtual Supervision

Indiana allows up to all of your supervision hours to be virtual, defined as synchronous, real-time audio and video on a HIPAA-compliant platform (IC 25-23.6-8-2.7). Phone-only and recorded formats don't meet that definition.

One limit to know: independent private practice work done away from your supervisor's premises doesn't count unless a qualified supervisor oversees that site (IC 25-23.6-8-2.7(g)). Confirm your work setting qualifies before you count hours there.

Who Can Supervise

Indiana recognizes AAMFT Approved Supervisors and AAMFT Supervisor Candidates. A licensed mental health professional who shows MFT training and enough supervision experience can also qualify (839 IAC 1-4-5).

Planning Your Hours

  • Confirm your work setting qualifies, especially if you're in private practice
  • Track MFT clients and couples or family sessions separately
  • Use a HIPAA-compliant video platform with live audio and video for supervision
  • Schedule the jurisprudence exam alongside the national exam

Supervision in Indiana

Indiana's virtual supervision rule means you can choose a supervisor for fit rather than distance. For queer and trans associates outside Indianapolis, that choice matters.

I hold an active Indiana LMFT license and supervise by telehealth. See the Indiana supervision page or request a session.
